In this workshop, join Caroline to explore the calming and meditative Japanese black ink painting of shodo (written words including Japanese script and characters, to express a message and the feeling within the artist) and sumi-e (pictorially capturing the qualities of an item, scene, animal or subject.) Learn the foundation brush strokes used to create your artworks. Give to a friend or loved one or keep as artwork for your home. Templates and examples will be provided to aid your creativity. In this workshop join Caroline to embroider a traditional hitomezashi sashiko-embellished pin cushion. A sustainable project, reusing quality cotton fabric combined with a preloved pot for the base. Using embroidery thread from a selection of colours, form sashiko stitching to embellish your piece. Each will be unique! Keep this pretty and useful piece for yourself or give as a gift to a friend. Learn how fabric can be given its own unique memory by you, the individual artist. Discover a vast range of colour ways that can be matched to your style, your home, your wardrobe, your gift-wrapping skills and much more. Everything is included to wrap and fold your fabric and dyes are available to purchase on the day. Hear some of Caroline’s stories from living in Japan and learning from skilled craftspeople. In this workshop join Caroline to hand-embroider Japanese-inspired temari balls. Each ball measures approximately 45mm in diameter and you will embellish them with pretty embroidery threads. You'll explore embroidery on light-weight thread-wrapped balls. This is a sustainable project, which allows use of materials from previous projects with many options of alternative materials. You will choose from a selection of prepared balls and use embroidery thread from a selection of colours to form a design based on a traditional pattern but with a modern twist. In this workshop, join Caroline to fold and embroider a pretty fabric paper (stiffened cotton fabric) lidded gift box (approx. 8cm square and 4cm deep.) Choose from a selection of prepared fabrics, contrasting the lid with the base for a unique piece. Discover this twist on traditional sashiko embroidery techniques and learn a little about Japanese culture. Watch some extra gift wrap techniques using the fabric paper, that you can go on to repeat at home. Hear about Caroline’s experiences of living in Japan and learning from skilled craftspeople. Explore the different shibori binding and wrapping techniques that create stunning patterns in a range of colours. Learn a little about this amazing Japanese technique along with stories from summers spent living in Japan. If you like, bring along 100% woven cotton white ready to wear clothing such as shirt, skirt, blouse to dye on the day (subject to space and time.) Each item created is unique to the hand of the artist who did the wrapping and binding. Relax in the welcoming and friendly atmosphere at Leicestershire Craft Centre, a great place for meeting new friends and learning from experienced creative people. Enjoy tea and coffee while working and either bring your own packed lunch or take a stroll in beautiful Market Harborough during our lunch break.
Make sure you wear old clothes on the day as it can be messy with the fabric dyes and the water!

Create a Japanese knot bag style fabric bag, sewn on the machine and embellished by hand with a range of sashiko patterns. The finished bag will be reversible for two different looks.
